Teachers' awareness and utilisation of indigenous games as instructional resources for holistic development of children in Ondo west local government, Nigeria

Abstract

Introduction: This study investigated teachers' awareness and use of indigenous games as a resource for holistic child development in the early years in Ondo West Local Government, Ondo State.


Purpose: The main purpose of the study is to provide empirical evidence on the awareness and utilisation of indigenous games by the Ondo State teachers to promote the holistic development of preschool children, while the specific purpose is to reveal the extent teachers are aware of indigenous games that can promote holistic development in preschool children and teachers’ level of utilisation of indigenous games to promote children’s holistic development.


Methodology: Descriptive survey research design was used to conduct the study. Early childhood teachers formed the population, and 200 randomly selected teachers took part in the study. Two instruments were used, titled 'Teachers Awareness of Indigenous Game Questionnaire and 'Teachers Utilisation of Indigenous Games Questionnaire, and each of the instruments contained 15 items and was validated using the Cronbach Alpha technique, which yielded a co-efficient of 0.75 and 0.80, respectively. The data collection lasted for two weeks after the necessary ethical consideration, and descriptive statistics of frequency count, percentage, and weighted average were used to analyse the data collected.


Results: Teachers were fully aware of indigenous games as instructional resources for the holistic development of preschool children (OWA= 2.54). However, teachers rarely utilised indigenous games as a resource to promote children's holistic development (WA= 1.93).


Recommendations: Every stakeholder must work together and provide an avenue for caregivers to use indigenous games to prevent their extinction.
